P.F. Sloan/Barry McGuire – “Eve of Destruction” (1965)

The eastern world, it is exploding
Violence flarin’, bullets loadin’
You’re old enough to kill, but not for votin’
You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re totin’
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin’

But you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

Don’t you understand what I’m tryin’ to say
Can’t you feel the fears I’m feelin’ today?
If the button is pushed, there’s no runnin’ away
There’ll be no one to save, with the world in a grave
[Take a look around ya boy, it's bound to scare ya boy]

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

Yeah, my blood’s so mad feels like coagulatin’
I’m sitting here just contemplatin’
I can’t twist the truth, it knows no regulation.
Handful of senators don’t pass legislation
And marches alone can’t bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin’
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
You may leave here for 4 days in space
But when you return, it’s the same old place
The poundin’ of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don’t leave a trace
Hate your next-door neighbor, but don’t forget to say grace
And… tell me over and over and over and over again, my friend
You don’t believe
We’re on the eve
Of destruction
Mm, no no, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

Hello group! My name is Elyse, I'm a sophomore at JCC majoring in physical therapy. When I'm not at school I work at Tumbleweed and I enjoy having fun with my friends. I liked these lyrics. They paint a of picture of what these soldiers go through everyday and what they are feeling. The lyrics are very in your face and the song seems to be a little anti-war. It sounds like he is mad about everything that is going on in the war and at home (5th segment of the poem). What do you guys think?

Hi guys. My name is Amanda I am a education major, in English 102.
“Eve of Destruction” is a very powerful song starting out describing the chaos going on in the world, with violence, and guns. Stating maybe people are being hypocritical saying they do not believe in the war but yet the still carry a gun around with them, everywhere there is war going on, “even the Jordan river has bodies floatin’”
I believe that this song is portraying young people and their fear and frustration of war, they are old enough to go to war and fight but yet they are not old enough to vote and be heard.
“respect is disintegratin’” there was no respect for the people who fought in war for our country they were almost looked down upon.
“you may leave here for 4 days in space, but when you return, it’s the same old place” I think that this is referring to the mission to space that only lasted a few days and when they returned everything was just as it was its nothing you can escape.
This song is depressing, expressing the fear of the youth during the Vietnam war.

From the first part of the song it seemed to be about being able to go to war at a young age yet not have all of the same rights everyone else does just because you aren't old enough yet. It is like no matter where you go there is always some type of war or conflict going on, whether you are actually out on the battlefield or not.

hey you guys. It's me again. i completely agree with both of your ideas. Like when Amanda said they are being hypocritical because they don't believe in the war they are fighting in but they still carry a gun. I think the reason it comes off as hypocritical is because the soldiers didn't want to be there in the first place. Considering this is the period of the draft so they were basically forced to go overseas. I would probably I also agree with you Brad. There was war everywhere whether it was overseas or right in America. Either people were fighting to protect the country or people were fighting at home because we are overseas fighting. You can certainly tell that people had a lot of feeling and emotion about the Vietnam War whether it be a civilian or a soldier. A lot of this conflict at home had to do with the government too. The people sound aggrevated with the way things are being handled in America.

haha.. I feel like I am repeating what you guys are saying, but i do believe people were distrought by the vitman war, it changed their lives completly, there was not only war overseas but right there in many homes pepole were fighting with each other for what they believed was right or wrong. people were very unhappy with the government at the time and it seems like its getting that way again, i just hope we do not have to go through the same extremes as we did back then.

Amanda i definitely agree. It is 2008 and some people are comparing our situation to the one back then. I wouldn't say it is as bad but if things keep up I can see it. And really thing the men from that war era that are still alive are greatly effected by the war. Like the post pardom depression and such. I can't imagine what they think about today's times.
